    Fast, Massive Weight Loss - Is It Right For You?

    Have you ever watched a daytime talk show only to be confronted with a morbidly obese person confined to a bed? And then after the host runs the video clip and gives you their life story, the thin version of the person comes walking out from behind the video. We are going to look at the pros and cons of rapid weight loss, and some of the common methods available to the paying public.

    What is Morbidly Obese?
    To qualify as morbidly obese, you are usually 100 pounds over or half to double your ideal body weight. This does not necessarily mean you are confined to a bed, but it does mean that your weight is starting to pose serious health problems or will shortly pose those problems. There are a lot of people out there who fit this description, and are usually warned by their doctor to lose weight or they will have to face an almost 100% guarantee of some health problems. Here are some of the most common problems that are linked to obesity:

    Adult Diabetes
    This disease may not scare you, as we all know there are treatments. But the best treatment for adult diabetes is usually low body weight and a healthy diet. So if you are already obese, the chances are you won’t take the diet seriously. To make matters worse, diabetes often gets more complicated as you age. Common problems can be: heart disease, blindness, nerve and kidney damage – just to name the most common.

    Bone and Joints
    The extra weight you are carrying around, wreaks havoc on your joints. The longer the weight is there, the more likely you are to develop problems with knees and ankles, and you also increase the likelihood of getting arthritis.

    Heart
    Like your joints, the heart is forced to work harder and pump more blood to all that extra fat. This can lead to an enlarged heart, and also heart attacks. Forget the fact that your diet may also be increasing the level of cholesterol and fat in your body, which will also impact negatively on your heart.

    Circulatory System
    Since your heart has to pump blood further than normal, there is an increased stress on your circulatory system. Hypertension is a common problem with morbidly obese people, and that can lead to strokes. Furthermore, the less mobile you become, the more likely you are to develop varicose veins and thrombosis, both of which can lead to lots forming.

    Longevity
    Most people, who are morbidly obese and stay that way for a long time, will likely die at a much younger age then those who choose to lose the weight. The longer you keep your body under this stress, the more likely you are to develop disease or chronic conditions that are irreversible and will lead to a shortened lifespan.

    What are my treatment options?

    Diet & Exercise
    The first thing you should do is speak with your doctor. Your doctor may be able to offer you some things you can try before you opt for surgery. For example, there are lots of people that lose weight very quickly just by changing their diet. Don’t roll your eyes! When you are seriously overweight, a controlled diet and a simple exercise regime can have immediate dramatic results, as long as you stick with it.

    Stomach Staples
    In this procedure, the stomach is actually stapled so that it is reduced in size. It works by creating a smaller space for food and restricting the input and output of the stomach. The end result is you feel fuller after eating less, which diminishes the craving for food. Many celebrities have tried this procedure, as it is considered to be relatively safe. Although there are risks if you continue to overeat or if the staples interfere with the stomach’s functionality, the benefit of still getting the proper nutrients and the high success rate might make this the procedure for you.

    Gastric Bypass Surgery
    This procedure bypasses part of the intestine, makes the stomach smaller, and has the dual effect of making you feel fuller and you absorb fewer calories. Once again, you feel fuller so you eat less. Plus, you are using a much smaller portion of your stomach, so you do not need to eat as much to feel fuller. The risks are similar to stapling, and the gains are just as dramatic with rapid weight loss occurring shortly after the surgery.

    Stomach Balloon
    The benefit of the stomach balloon is that it can be done without surgery. A balloon is inserted into your stomach through your esophagus, and then deposited in your stomach. It is filled with a non-harmful liquid, and it is too large to move out of your stomach. It will make you feel fuller, so you will eat less. There are several potential problems with the balloon, ranging from its short lifespan (6 months) to the fact that it prevents the stomach from contracting. This means you might actually end up with a larger stomach when you have it removed.

    I’ve Lost The Weight – Now What?
    Depending on how overweight you were, your age and the length of time you carried the weight, you might require plastic surgery to deal with the excess skin created by your excess weight. Skin is very elastic when we are young, but it loses that elasticity as we age. And even if you are still in your 20s, excessive weight may have created to much extra skin for it to return to normal. It is more than likely that options will be discussed with you while you are going through the process, but be prepared to contemplate some surgery to take of the extra skin.

    Final Thoughts
    Keep in mind that these procedures are usually only recommended by doctors who are deeply concerned with your health. The first and best option it to take up a healthy lifestyle, and to avoid a quick fix. And if you do get to the point where you are morbidly obese, then talk to a doctor fast. The longer you leave that weight on, the greater the damage it will do to your health.
